Leprosy, also called Hansen’s, is an infectious disease that causes severe, disfiguring skin sores and nerve damage in the arms and legs. Once known as the horrifying ancient disease, perhaps the most shocking part about the sudden onset of this life-threatening disease is how it’s spreading across America.
Researchers, The Health Resources and Services Administration are warning that there are currently about 6,500 cases of leprosy reported in the U.S.
The CDC is calling it “an emerging infectious disease.” Leprosy can be spread through respiratory droplets from someone with untreated leprosy. However, a recent study conducted by Dr Richard W. Truman and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, has found that armadillos carry the bacteria that cause leprosy and half of the people in South Eastern US (especially Texas and Florida) were linked to armadillos.
Please help raise awareness of this dangerous disease and avoid contact with armadillos at all costs. Early detection could save your life!
