Fans were excited to finally have a way to buy tickets for the event, but now their hopes are dashed.
Blizzard has now fully canceled BlizzConline, originally slated for early 2022. The cancellation comes after Blizzard’s decision to move the event from Anaheim to China, which was met with significant backlash by fans and players alike.
Blizzard’s announcement today will come as no surprise to anyone: the firm has canceled their forthcoming BlizzConline event.
Pandemic fears made it hard to organize for an in-person BlizzCon this autumn, therefore the online event was initially scheduled for early 2022. For roughly the same reasons, the event repeated again in 2020.
Of course, when the Blizzard announced BlizzConline 2022 in May, it hadn’t yet been hit with a state complaint alleging years of sexual harassment and discrimination. Since then, hundreds of employees have been dismissed or penalized, and the corporation has been chastised for neglecting workers’ requests as harassment tales have flooded the internet. J. Allen Brack, the company’s president, was ousted and replaced by two Activision executives. The present state of affairs around Blizzard and Activision-Blizzard is bleak.
“Any BlizzCon event requires every single one of us to make happen, an entire-company endeavor fuelled by our passion to share what we produce with the community we care about so much,” the studio writes in a blog post today announcing the cancellation of the event. “At this time, we believe the resources required to put on a presentation of this magnitude would be better spent supporting our employees and furthering the development of our games and experiences.”
The firm also says it will “take the time to reinvent what a future BlizzCon event may look like” and “guarantee that it feels as secure, inviting, and inclusive as possible,” which hasn’t always been the case in the past.
Finally, the studio stresses that new announcements will still be made even if there is no BlizzCon.
“Even if BlizzConline will not be held in February, we will continue to provide announcements and updates for our games.” We’re pleased of our teams and how far they’ve come in each of our games. We have a lot of great news and releases to share with you in the near future. You’ll continue to learn about them via our franchise channels, with the BlizzCon team’s great employees helping to support these initiatives.”
The financial report and investor call for Activision-2021 Blizzard’s third quarter are set for November 2nd.
Due to a lengthy run of controversies in the MMO and gaming field over the past several years, including the Blitzchung boycott, huge layoffs, labor issues, and executive pay controversy, Activision-Blizzard is regarded a problematic corporation in the MMO and gaming industry. The company was sued by the state of California in the summer of 2021 for fostering a work environment that was riddled with sexual harassment and discrimination, and the company’s disastrous response has added to Blizzard’s ongoing pipeline issues and the widespread perception that its online games are on the decline. Multiple state and federal authorities are investigating the corporation as of autumn 2021.
