Jayson Tatum, the newest member of the Boston Celtics, is in for a huge payday this season. But despite his $3.5 million salary, he’ll earn $4 million more than Larry Bird did during his entire career.
Larry Bird was a basketball player who became one of the most famous athletes in American history. He is known for his career with the Boston Celtics and as a coach. Read more in detail here: when did larry bird retire.
Don’t tell Jayson Tatum’s bank account, but he’s no Larry Bird. Tatum, who is 23 years old, is a fantastic young player and the Boston Celtics’ captain. He’s been an NBA All-Star for the last two seasons and has improved in each of his four seasons in the league. This season, Tatum will earn $4 million more than Bird did in his entire 13-year career. He can thank Bird for that.

In 2017, the Boston Celtics managed to deceive the Philadelphia 76ers. Boston held the first selection in the 2017 NBA Draft, and most mock drafts projected Washington guard Markelle Fultz as the top pick. The Sixers possessed the third overall selection, and Danny Ainge, the team’s president of basketball operations at the time, had his sights set on Tatum. After Fultz and Lonzo Ball, Tatum was widely regarded as the third-best talent in the draft.
With the Sixers, Ainge struck a deal, sending the top selection in return for the third pick and a future first-round pick.
According to NBA.com, 76ers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo stated at the time, “We are extremely happy with the result of this deal, which puts us in the fortunate position of choosing first overall in consecutive draft years.” “History shows that the No. 1 pick has the best chance of generating franchise-level talent, and we believe that this year’s draft class has that potential.”
Both history and Colangelo were incorrect.
Tatum has been the superior player. In his first season, he averaged 13.9 points per game, which he increased to 26.4 last season. Fultz was hindered by injuries throughout his two seasons with the Sixers, appearing in just 33 games. He played with the Orlando Magic for the previous two seasons, playing in eight games last season.
Jayson Tatum will earn $4 million more this season than Bird did throughout the course of his career.
Tatum isn’t being disparaging of the current Celtics player when he says he’s no Bird. There aren’t many people that can compare to the Hall of Famer.
Bird earned three NBA championships and three consecutive MVP awards. He’s a 12-time NBA All-Star who’s also been selected to the All-NBA team ten times. He was a winner who helped his colleagues improve.
Last season, Tatum had his greatest statistical season, averaging 26.4 points and 7.4 rebounds. Despite having two all-stars in him and Jaylen Brown, Boston ended 36-36. He’s made it to the Eastern Conference Finals before, but he’s never gotten beyond the first round. In his second season, Bird led his club to the NBA Finals.
Tatum was given a five-year maximum contract deal by the Celtics. Tatum is expected to make $28,103,500 this season, according to Spotrac. During the last year of his current contract, he’ll earn $37,096,620 in 2025-26.
According to Spotrac, Bird earned a total of $24,070,000 throughout his 13 years as a professional basketball player.
Tatum owes his lucrative deal to Bird.
Tatum can’t be blamed for signing such a large deal. Today’s gamers are making a killing, and it’s all because to those who came before them.
When Bird and Magic Johnson first entered the league, they were credited with rescuing it. They not only carried their personal animosity into the NBA from the 1979 NCAA championship game, but they also helped ignite one of the greatest team rivalries in sports history.
The Celtics-Lakers rivalry was reignited. In the 1980s, either Bird’s Celtics or Magic’s Lakers appeared in the NBA Finals every year. They played each other three times in the final round.
The two, together with Michael Jordan, helped to make the NBA a worldwide sport, resulting in more income for the league and higher compensation for players.
Today, players are compensated based on their potential rather than their actual performance. Tatum has a long way to go before he can be compared to Bird, but the Celtics icon owes him a debt of gratitude for his financial stability.
