SANTA ANA, Calif. (CBSLA) — According to statistics supplied by the Orange County Health Care Agency, COVID-19 hospitalizations and case rates continue to rise in Orange County.
The hospitalization rate in the county hasn’t been this high since September 21. The number of people admitted to the hospital increased from 282 on Monday to 322 on Tuesday, with the number of people admitted to the critical care unit maintaining at 66.

“I’m startled myself,” said Andrew Noymer, an epidemiologist and UC Irvine professor of population health and disease prevention who had predicted a winter spike.
“We were discussing yesterday about how it would come back down to 200, but (hospitalizations) are skyrocketing.” “320 hospital cases is a significant number,” Noymer remarked.
“This isn’t the end of the world,” he remarked, “but it is frightening.” “I’m officially worried, and the problem isn’t because we haven’t seen this level before; it’s that it’s going in the wrong way.”
At this stage, Noymer believes the hospital levels are tolerable.
He remarked, “It’s not anything health services can’t manage.”
Noymer believes that children in grades K-12 should return to class next week.
“We shuttered the schools in March 2020 because we had no idea what was coming and no vaccination,” Noymer said. “I believe we understand what’s coming, and it’ll be a not-so-fun Omicron wave — but kids 5 and up, as well as their parents, can be vaccinated.”
“As is usually the case, children aren’t the ones that get ill the most. It’s the grownups that are the problem…. So, should schools be closed next week? “I don’t think so, based on what I’m seeing.”
According to the OC HCA’s statistics, the county has officially sequenced four instances of Omicron so far.

As of Tuesday, the adjusted daily case rate per 100,000 people was 15, with a 4.5 percent testing positive rate and a 4.4 percent health equity quartile, which evaluates underprivileged populations severely afflicted by the epidemic.
The county reported 987 new illnesses, bringing the total number of infections to 330,012, as well as six new deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 5,883.
Five of the fatalities reported on Tuesday happened this month, bringing the total number of deaths in December to 35. In October, there was another fatality.
The death toll in November is 101, 127 in October, 196 in September, and 182 in August.

According to figures published Thursday, the number of completely vaccinated residents in Orange County went from 2,295,286 to 2,314,232. This equates to 67 percent of the county’s population.
The number of inhabitants who have received the two-dose immunization regimen from Pfizer or Moderna has increased from 2,144,648 to 2,162,816.
The number of people who received the Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccination climbed from 150,638 to 151,416. As of that date, the county has given out 768,412 booster injections.
